Russian and American dignitaries gathered in Korolev, Russia outside Moscow at Russian Mission Control, awaiting opening of the hatch of the International Space Station, where the Soyuz rocket that blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, successfully docked.
The hatch opened at 3:34 CT, and ISS crew welcomed U.S. astronaut Miguel Lopez-Alegria, U.S. entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin.
Anousheh Ansari is the first female private space explorer. Her first words to the World from space were in a reply to the comment, "You made the whole world look at you." She smiled and said, "I wouldn't be here without you."
"Now we all need to know how to get there," came the next comment, to which Ms. Ansari beamed a smile and said, "I'm working on it. It was a smooth ride."
Anousheh Ansari helped finance the Ansari X Prize in 2002, which paid $10 million to the operators of SpaceShipOne for being first to make two successful privately financed manned trips into space.
Well wishers from around the world have been expressing their inspiration and thanks at Ansari's blog
