Travel: Festivals

Our mothers all told us when we were young that liars go to hell. But if you live in Moncrabeau - a small village in France with around 800 inhabitants - if you lie, well you go to the ‘Lying Academy’!
Indeed every year in August this village holds a festival called Liars' Festival, where self proclaimed liars have ‘lying duels’ making up elaborate lies but sticking to some very intricate and important rules. The winner or the ‘King of the Liars’ then joins the ‘Lying Academy’ a prestigious body of 40 individuals who are very highly regarded and take their positions very seriously.

Cinco de Mayo

I think everyone living in the United States know about Cinco de Mayo. If you are a US citizen who does not know about this even, well, I guess that’s a real shame. Simply put, Cinco de Mayo is “5th of May”. This is a holiday that is celebrated by the whole region of Mexico. The main events are usually held in the state of Puebla. Some people who are not well-versed about Cinco de Mayo think that it is Mexico’s Independence Day celebration, but actually it is not. Cinco de Mayo memorializes the preliminary victory of the Mexican forces under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin over the French forces in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Hammamet Festival

On the 15th of this month the Hammamet Festival will commence and it promises quite a show for the Tunisian Public. The Hammamet Festival unlike Carthage Festival, has included quite a tight packed schedule that lasts until the 21st of August and includes several theatrical plays. This is quite strange for Summer Festivals which usually include merely musical concerts but the organizer of the Hammamet Festival Fathy El Kharat defended his idea and told reporters that he is against Summer Festivals being merely musical and that he prides himself in providing variety!

Ireland

Generally, traveling to Europe this time of the year may not be a very good option, especially if you plan to go to the southern part of the continent as it is very hot in this region. This country, the largest island in Europe, is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. Traveling to Ireland is best from May till September as the weather is good in these months. Bastille Day in Paris, France

Talks about Italy winning the 2006 World Cup and French football star Zinedine Zidane getting expelled from the final match have not totally subsided yet, but for many French people, it’s time to move on now. It’s time to get busy with other important things like the Bastille Day, France’s most important national holiday that commemorates the taking over of the Bastille prison by the people of France. Such uprising ignited the French revolution that freed their nation from oppression.

Shakespeare is alive and well around the world! That may come as good news to many, not so good to others. Whether or not you are a follower of the Bard of Avon, you might like to know that there are Shakespearean Festivals, theaters, schools across both east and western countries. Globe Tokyo attracts music fans and theatergoers as a wonderful venue with the atmosphere of 16th-century England. The Ashland Shakespeare Festival in Oregon is just one of many such theaters across the U.S. where the Bard's plays entertain audiences year-round...

Sundance Film Festival

I actually made it to the Sundance Film Festival this year -- after living in Utah for longer than I care to admit -- and had a great time. With no pre-purchased tickets in hand, my gal pal and I arrived in Park City at 8am, bought tickets for a 9am showing, and then stayed for the post-screening discussion. We saw two more films that day (ate lunch with the director and star of one of those films!), ate a great dinner in a deli, and then headed down the mountain and home. We even got to cast our votes for Audience Favorite film.

Park City, Utah hosts the Sundance Film Festival each January, when thousands of tourists, Hollywood types, artists, and locals flock to view the 10-days of films in nearly a dozen venues across town.

In Chine, towards the end of June every year, people celebrate a holiday known as the Dragon Boat Festival. The Festival is held to honor the memory of Qu Xuan, a politcian and poet who, in the year 278 B.C., is said to have committed suicide by jumping into a river.
During the festival, local people throw rice dumplings into the water to save Xuan's soul from the evil spirits that reside in the river.

The festival is by far the largest in the world. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come every year for the celebration before the start of 'Lent' –a fasting period of forty days before Easter-.
The carnival takes place in the sambadrome, a huge stadium. There, samba schools compete with each for the best costumes and dancing.
