Taj Mahal

Traveling to India is not complete without visiting its most significant monument and in fact one of the world’s best architectural creations, the Taj Mahal, found in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India. Its grand design, which has Islamic, Persian, Turkish and Hindu and Mughal architectural influences, has attracted thousands of travelers from all over the world, and inspired poets and artists. But more splendid than its design is the story behind its creation.

Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal was built from 1631 to 1654. It was constructed as a final resting place for Arjumand Bano Begum (also known as Mumtaz Mahal), the most beloved wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Mumtaz Mahal was a very caring and loyal wife who supported Shah Jahan at all times and wherever he was, even in war camps. In return, Shah Jahan exalted her and loved her dearly. But Mumtaz Mahal died young after giving birth to their child. Shah Jahan was in great sorrow when her beautiful wife died. It is said that he and the rest of his empire mourned for two years. Then after their mourning, he had the Taj Mahal built by the best architects and craftsmen so that her wife and their untarnished love will never be forgotten.
