Tucked away in the desert valleys of southern Jordan, its Nabatean founders could hardly have chosen a more strategic site. And that is what makes Petra fascinating and gives it its magical atmosphere.
People as diverse as Moses and Steven Spielberg saw something in the place; in ancient times Moses struck a nearby rock from which trickled a spring, while Spielberg shot parts of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” in the narrow Siq.
Only through the Siq could you enter the exquisite ancient rose city. And only through the Siq would you encounter the “Treasury”; salmon-pink facade carved into a cliff is one of the most romantic images of the Middle East.
A visit to Petra is perfect during the months of May, June and July; the weather is hot but tolerable. But any time of the year, the Bedouins of the Jordanian desert are hospitable, funny and make the coldest area in the desert feel warm.
