Tech N Gadgets: PlayStation

Developing game consoles is a risky business. But it is a risk that Sony is willing to take when it came up with the PlayStation. If you think that Sony profits a lot from the PS3 it released for the market you are quite wrong. From the time the PS3 was released to the market, Sony has been experiencing losses. This year, the company’s total loss is already around $3.3 billion. In 2007 its loss amounts to $2.16 and for this year, the deficit is $1.16 billion. These continued losses are attributed to the fact that Sony maintains an expensive production, but sells consoles at much lowered price.

What’s the real problem with Nintendo Wii? There’s a list of things and I’ll start with Longevity … It does not have the longevity to live very long. The technical specs just aren’t there. For one it can only output 720X480 resolution. And since flat screen TVs produce roughly 1900X1200 resolution, you have to stretch that picture three times its size, making for a very blurry and jaggy image.

Remember the people buying the Wii are not real gamers. They are going to buy it like they would buy any nostalgic device. The Wii could have been a Beanie Baby for all we care. It just so happens that the gimmicky gadget of the year is in the video game realm. This really is not a next gen system. The buzz already is the Wii is boring to play. I am not talking about newbie buzz, I am talking about year old owners who are just simply bored out of their minds with the Wii.

Diamond Covered PS2 Controller

How would you feel having the PlayStation controller hanging from your neck? That would be so bulky and weighty, aside from the fact that people would just think you’re weird and already too much of a PlayStation addict that you don’t want to be even separated from the game controller. But if it is this miniature PS2 controller neck pendant hanging from your neck then for sure people will be impressed. What’s so special about it? The fact that it is exactly a replica of the actual game controller and has 8K white gold with 68.34k of black diamonds embellishing the surface makes it amazing.

Sony PS3

Sony now has a big reason to be really proud of their PlayStation 3. You know that the PS3 has been getting some bad reviews lately because of the poor sales it’s been making. It’s now almost a year since the PS3 was unleashed but it seems like it’s only now that Sony is getting the kind of sales figure it has been expecting. In just one week Sony was able to sell over 100,000 units of the PS3! That’s already a record because the usual sale per week is around 40,000 units. This definite improve is due to the price cuts made by Sony on the 80GB PS3, which now only costs $499. And then there’s also the new 40GB model that available at $399.

Facts and figures show that the PlayStation 3 is not the best console developed by Sony. Despite the low sales of this console, Sony is still continuously looking for way to improve it. Just last June they touched up some of its features; PS3 now has the AVC high-profile format that video for faster and high quality video streaming. Another good news about the PS3 has been announced. In the very near future the PS3 will be available with the DivX video support! How great is that?! Well, for those who don’t know, DivX is a very recognized video format that is being used in a lot of devices including Windows and Mac.

In order to meet the frenzy of shopping for the coming Christmas holidays Sony has announced its intention to launch a new and lighter version of the 7-year old PlayStation 2 game console. Compared to the original model which weighs 850 grams, this latest model of the PS2 weighs only 750 grams, why? what makes the difference? Sony has integrated the AC-adaptor within the console. Yes, it’s goodbye to the cumbersome AC-adaptor which adds to the bulk of the device.

Sony gives their clients more choices for the PSP. They disclosed their intention launch the new model in the handheld console lineup. By September of this year Sony PSP aficionados can get hold of the new model. This new PSP features a 4.3-inch wide high resolution and is 19% trimmer than the existing PSP. With these features you can expect a really sleek handheld device. Added features include the internal flash drive and the right analog stick nub.

Dying to get your hands on one of Sony’s PS3 but just can’t because of its somewhat stiff price tag? Here’s good news for you…the current 60GB model will be available for only $499! That’s $100 below the original price and that’s just after 7 months in the North American market. This surprising move maybe the company’s way of recouping some of their losses after failing to meet their target sales from the onset. And aside from slashing on the 60BG’s price tag Sony is also releasing a new model come August. The new 80GB PlayStation 3 will be selling for $599 and serving as an appetizer for gamers will be the popular MotorStorm game that was released earlier on this year.

PSP Camera

PSP or Playstation Portable owners will be glad to hear the good tidings that their device will be getting a new add-on. By May 16 the Go! Cam will be released in the European and Australian market. American PSP users need not worry because for sure it will find its way there too although at the moment there is no news regarding that matter, I’m just giving my own predictions.

From the launching of Sony PlayStation 3, 2 choices have been made available by the company to their supporters. The 20GB and the 60GB were the configurations made available for the PS3 enthusiasts. But after several months in the field it has been established by Sony that the 60GB PS3 has a higher sales in the whole United States and for this reason Sony is pulling out the lower selling 20GB from the market. Based on Sony’s figures, the 60GB PS3 outsold the other model with a ratio 10 to 1.

Continuous improvement is a must in order for companies to maintain their good standing in their specific trade. In achieving this end Sony has recently released a firmware update for their PlayStation Portable or PSP. This firmware 3.30 update offers a great advantage to PSP owners because of the different features it holds. Through the PSP 3.30 firmware update PSP owners will be able to have extended support for the PlayStation Network games and it will also allow users to play back videos stored on their PSPs with 720x480 resolution.

Sony PS3

Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii have had a great head start over the Sony PS3 so you can just visualize the tough competition faced by the latter. For its launching in Australia this coming March 23, Sony included lots of freebies and giveaways to make their offer sweeter to the gaming masses. The freebies will be smart way to take people’s attention away from its exorbitant price tag - $999.

Sony PS3

After so much glitch and delays, European gamers will finally be able to get their share of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game console. European gamers had better remember March 23. Yes this is the crucial date of the PS3’s launching in the European continent.

However, those who are eagerly watching out for this hot gadget may face some pangs of disappointment due to the price range. Just last year, Sony sold the basic type of console – containing 20-GB, to the US and Japanese market for $600 or 300 pounds. But in Europe, the company intends to focus only in presenting the 60-GB version of the PS3, which will sell for 395 pounds. Comparing that spec, I guess the price is just a fair exchange. Anyway, to anyone who really wants something badly no price is neither too high nor too low.

Ever played Pac Man on your Pentium 4 laptop and felt that this machine could give me just a bit more?
Ever asked Einstein to solve 1+1=?
Ever gone to the 1001 Flavors Ice-Cream shop and asked for vanilla?
Well that's the way Sony Computer Entertainment’s Executive Vice President Phil Harrison is feeling about the latest Sony PS3 games currently available. He feels that current PS3 games use less than half of the system capabilities, but at the same time he also said that “Nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability.”
