Tech N Gadgets: Dell

Everyone has been wondering about the new Dell netbook and how Dell was going to –attempt- to challenge the more established netbooks such as the Macbook. For starters they have chosen the very ‘original’ name of the ‘Dell E’! The new netbook will come in many colors and two ‘sizes’ the 8.9” model and the more interesting ‘E Slim’ which is 12.1” but only 0.8” thick!

Dell has always catered to each individual customer’s needs and so the 8.9” model will come in three types the E-Classic being for the casual user and the E-Video+ will contain a webcam and Bluetooth for those more ‘techy’ amongst us!

I would hate it very much if my laptop would give me electric shock every time I touch it! If that happens, the first thing I will do would be to return it to the shop where I bought it. I’m quite sure the owners of Dell aluminum laptops are doing the very same thing right now with the reports that these aluminum laptops give off electric shock. According the complaints and reports at the Dell forums, the shocks differ in strength, some are mere tingles while others are sudden jolt. And we all know any of those can be really irritating. The laptop models under scrutiny here right now are the brushed aluminum finish XPS M1330 and the XPS M1530.

Dell Insprion 1525

Dell’s 1520 Inspiron laptops were the receiving end of some criticism when first launched in the market. The major compliant about this line of Inspiron laptops is the fact that it does not say much in terms of looks as well as size. Dell heard these cries, which after only 6 months of the 1520’s release, the company has come up with the Inspiron 1525 which is about 25% smaller, 30% thinner and less heavy than its predecessor. And with the noticeably improved appearance this Dell Inspiron 1525 is equipped with features that work satisfactorily with the standard applications.

To be able to reach to a wider scope of the market, Dell is venturing out into the music entertainment. This intention to move into a broader market is made known when the company announced that it intends to acquire mobile entertainment software Zing. This will definitely add more “zing” to Dell’s reputation, not to mention their sales! Dell’s Latitude D420 will be getting an upgrade by July 2 with the release of the new Latitude D430. Unlike some of Dell’s new notebooks that already operate using Intel’s Santa Rosa platform, the new D430 will use the Napa platform that made its debut in January 2006. But aside from that, this new Latitude will be able to hand over the deliverables since it features two options for you in the Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 (1.2GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB) or the Intel Core Solo U1400 processor. Likewise, it sports an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 that powers its 12.1 widescreen display.

After several setbacks last year, Dell is now finally getting back on its feet, recovering their lost ground. This is by becoming the first major desktop vendor to unleash laptops as well as mass-market desktops that are already installed with the Linux operating system. Gone will be the days when Dell customers have to be content with a unit with a blank hard drive and bootable CD or DVD.

Currently, Dell is already offering home office desktops and laptops, but without an operating system installed. For the laptop they offer the Latitude and Inspiron line; for the desktops they have the Dimension and the OptiPlex.

Michael Dell

In the past several weeks and even months, computer company Dell has been buffeted by problems. Their share in the market losses has been a great one that they are now in the process of streamlining the whole business in order to get back what they had lost. All of Dell’s efforts will be headed by returning CEO Michael Dell. Dell replaced former CEO Kevin Rollins last Wednesday and he said he plans to be Dell’s Chief Executive for several years. The job of turning the company around is nothing new to him since he was the one brought it about from scratch way back in 1984. This time he’s in for another awesome challenge.

Dell battery

Dell Inc., the world’s biggest PC manufacturer ranked by Forbes magazine as the 28th largest company in the US by revenue, is going to recall more than 4 million laptop computer batteries—the biggest computer-related recall in the US so far. The company told last Monday that the batteries may overheat and cause fire. Although there were no reports about Dell laptops causing serious injuries due to overheating batteries and although there were only 6 cases of Dell laptops bursting into flames in the US, the company deemed it necessary to recall the batteries to ensure safety of customers.

Some analysts say that Dell’s recall could hurt the company’s reputation and standing in the market. Dell chairman and founder Michael Dell is however confident that the said recall won’t have a great impact on its business. Other analysts believe this is possible adding that Dell could in fact benefit from it since they are the first to recall the batteries, which are also being used by other manufacturers.
