Come June you’ll be able to hold the much awaited Palm Pre in your hands. But you know what? It is not the only thing that Palm will be dispatching next month. A cell phone needs to be charged regularly to keep working, so voila! Palm is also unveiling a new charger. But, it’s not a common type of handset charger. Be prepared to make way for the Touchstone, a wireless charging pad.
At first glance you won’t immediately recognize the Touchstone as a charging device because of its round shape and flat surface. In fact, there’s nothing to indicate that it’s a charger at all!
However, this dock really works through the coil embedded in the pad. To charge the Pre, the user just needs to put the phone on the surface and magnets integrated in the dock will hold it in place. The coil produces a magnetic field which in turn creates a voltage that’s supplied to the phone’s battery. When charging, the phone automatically switches to speakerphone when there’s a call. It goes back to the regular call set when separated from the dock.
For $69.99 you can have the Touchstone charger, but make sure you have a Pre to use it for. Charging without wires? Hmm, it seems quite neat!
