Goodbye Palm OS, Hello to WebOS

palm os

The Palm OS is no more. It’s dead. Palm CEO, Ed Colligan has given the red light for the said OS. The Palm Centro is the last model to have the Palm OS. Do you feel sad by this news? Well, don’t worry, Palm is planning a much better system, the Palm WebOS. Though it is still unofficial this new OS is being built to power the new Pre smartphone, which will be available in other carriers in 2010. According to Palm, the Pre is going to have an app store and the company will have to control over the content. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Palm is now making the transition to webOS. Maybe the only problem that Palm is going to encounter is the opposition it might meet among the 30,000 Palm OS software developers who made more than 100,000 applications. Right now, Ed Colligan is convincing them to move to the new operating system.

Oh, another problem that Palm could face is if Apple files a lawsuit on patent infringement against them. But, Colligan said that at this point they have no issues about Apple’s patents.

I hope PalmOS will stick around for a while, a lot of people will be disappointed if it goes away too quickly. webOS will come but not everyone can afford it yet.
