Google did not foresee that one of its former employees would come up with a search engine that could possibly overthrow Google as the search giant. Launched just this Monday is the new search engine called Cuil. Don’t be fooled by its spelling because you can easily pronounce it as “cool.” Cuil is the creation of former Google employee Anna Patterson and her husband Tom Costello, who also function as the President and CEO of the said search engine. And also acting as vice president of engineering and a third cofounder of Cuil is another former Google employee, Russell Power.

When Cuil came out, many are speculating whether this could possibly compete with the search giant Google. This new search engine is said to index three times more Web pages than Google and yield organized results with privacy protection for its users. In addition, in coming up with the results, Cuil analyzes the pages according to their relationships and the results are placed in their respective menus. Last Friday Google disclosed that it discovered 1 trillion unique Web pages but it didn’t say how many of those have been indexed. So in comparison to Cuil that is able to index three times more pages than Google, does it mean that Cuil can best Google with 3 trillion pages? That would certainly be an amazing feat.

Cuil will be different from Google because instead of text-based results, Cuil will have a magazine-like approach wherein the resulting pages will not only include texts but images as well. This would be great for the younger generation who love colorful web pages.

So, the question now is, should Google be threatened by Menlo Park, California-based Cuil? Once again only time will tell.
