Nvidia Tegra Processors: The All-in-One Chip

The battle for processor supremacy is on the rise once again. Intel released its new Atom Centrino lineup of processors back in April, and its fierce competitor, Nvidia, is not far behind. Yesterday, Nvidia launched the new Tegra line of processors. All of the chips under this line are capable of handling multiple tasks. The Tegra processors are aimed for Mobile Internet Devices or MIDs. Experts see a lot of potential in Tegra chips because it already carries everything that’s needed to develop a Mobile Internet Device, from GPU, CPU, and graphics to imaging.

The Tegra line is composed of three chips:

- the 700MHz Tegra 600
- 800MHz Tegra 650 and
- the APX 2500.

The APX is targeted for use in handset and smartphones. These chips are really very small, no bigger than a dime. For this line’s excellent performance, an ARM 11 central processing unit core is used as the brain. And because of its size, Tegra processors are 10 times more power efficient compared to the chips used today. And even though it is small in size, performance is not compromised. Users are assured of high-definition media and superb computing experience.
