Samsung Electronics has a new product that will take computing to a higher level. The company announced it will launch a flash memory-based solid-state disk having a 256GB capacity this year. Customer samples will be available by September, but the rest of the production will be at the end of this year. Contrary to its capacity, the SSD is on the small side in terms of dimensions since it only measures 2.5-inches and 19 millimeters. This chip is capable of a read speed of 200M bytes per second and sequential write speed of 160M bytes per second.

SSDs are only just staring out, but they could be the biggest thing in the near future. In fact, it is already foreseen as the big competitor to hard disk drives. Many experts find SSDs more convenient especially when it comes to reliable performance. Unlike HDDs, SSDs do not contain any moving parts which make them even more “power efficient, noiseless, and no heat dissipation.”

Samsung hopes more usage of the chip will help create a market for it. It will primarily be used in notebook computers. The 256GB SSD is going to be a bit pricey - $700 up to $1000.
