Acer is a company that is known for making excellent desktops and laptops. It has been in this business for a long time now. Maybe it has proven its expertise in this field that why the company is branching out to a territory fairly new to it – smartphones. Acer President Gianfranco Lanci recently announced that an Acer smartphone would be released at the end of this year or early next year. The device would be powered by Microsoft’s Windows. Once this smartphone gets released, it will make up 10% of the company’s revenues the company said. Acer’s smartphone would be initially sold to wireless carriers instead of going directly to retail.

Acer has thought and carefully planned this initiative. Last March it acquired Taiwanese company E-Ten, which is a company focused on making PDA phones. But under Acer, E-Ten would no longer make PDA phones; instead it would shift its focus on developing smartphones only.

The market for smartphones is a very competitive one, let’s just wait and see if Acer can catch up.
