Many of you might have heard of ‘Blackle’, an alternative to Google that apparently saves energy and now as part of this quest to save the world one watt at a time ‘LocalCooling’ was created. I must admit I thought it was a sport’s drink when I first heard of it but it turns out it’s a desktop application that not only estimates the energy use of your computer but suggest how to being that number down. You download ‘LocalCooling’ its scans your computer and gives you its estimate and suggestions then you can create an account on their website and turn it into a competition of who can save the most.

The ‘LocalCooling’ team have even managed to get some companies involved and created a league table of ‘savers’ just for them. The great thing is it doesn’t just tell you many watts you have saved but also in terms of how many trees you have saved and how many gallons of CO2 have not been emitted thanks to you. Sounds perfect, right? Well I must warn you its estimates can be VERY wrong, but otherwise it’s a call application to have.
