Intel netbooks for Developing countries

netbooks

So there are these new ideas going around that 95% of the children in the world do not have access to the internet and so there has been a rush to develop a cheap device with which this generation of kids can delve into the realms of the World Wide Web. Intel has obviously cashed in on this releasing its Second Generation Classmate which runs on a simple six cell battery. The specs on this device are good considering its intended use: 7- to 9”, 512MB memory and a 30GB disk and it has been created so governments can hand these so called netbooks to children to further their education.

I will give them that this is a noble idea, but realistically regardless of the minimal cost of this device would the money spent on it not be put to better use buying food. These children are either starving to death or have terminal illnesses, I am sure being able to use a laptop or access the internet is exactly what they want. Maybe we should… umm feed them before we teach them the wonders of XP?! Just a thought.
