The war in disc formats is about to end it seems. Who will bow down from this competition? It’s no other than Toshiba. There was a statement made by an unnamed source in the company, “We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business.” This intention to step down and let Sony’s Blu-ray format was brought on by the fact that Warner Brothers studio will no longer use HD DVD products. And to make things worse, WalMart also announced last Friday that it would not stock HD DVDs in its outlets. It would not be enough that Toshiba have backing from NEC, Sanyo and Microsoft.
Toshiba Withdrawing its HD DVD
Analysts say that this move to withdraw from the DVD market could cost Toshiba millions of dollars in losses. However, despite this talk about withdrawing from the disc format industry, Toshiba’s stocks still climbed by 6.4 percent in the trading. Other companies think that this move by Toshiba is a smart one despite the losses that it will incur when it finally stops producing HD DVD.
When Toshiba finally withdraws from the DVD market, Sony’s Blu-ray will be proclaimed the winner.
