This new mobile hard drive is labeled as the Travelstar 5K500. As a mobile drive this measures only a minute 12.5 millimeters, operates at 5,400 rpm and comes with 3.0Gbit/sec SATA or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. With the development of this Travelstar 5K500 it is hoped that a new era for more advanced notebooks, sleeker desktops and gaming consoles will commence. This colossal hard drive will hit the market in February.

But aside from the Travelstar 5K500, Hitachi also declared another version – the Travelstar E5K500, which is an enhanced-availability version. This type will come in 2 models, 400GB and 500GB capacity. This E5K500 is made to work in blade servers, network routers, video surveillance system and point-of-sale terminals.
