There are several companies that are into developing better-performing chips. It’s already a kind of a race for them all and getting ahead is Sun Microsystems Inc. because of their newly developed chip that they say will bring about a new line of business. This innovation is called the UltraSPARC T2, which is even more powerful and fast than what Sun has produced before. The characteristic of the UltraSPARC T2 is that it is an eight-core, 64-thread microprocessor.
With this new chip, Sun hopes to invite a wider scope of market not just to the server businesses but also to storage equipment and networking market. In order to cater to these differently scope markets Sun will produce different versions of the UltraSPARC T2 wherein some will feature lesser core and use up smaller amount of energy. The full version of the T2 will be available for a price a bit lower than $1,000 and the much simpler composition for much lesser price.
