IBM Breakthrough with Power6 Microprocessor

IBM has once again proven their capability in developing revolutionary solutions for the computing industry. What they have come up with recently has what it takes for improving the operations of industries that rely on microprocessors. The new Power6 chip is IBM’s latest creation which is dubbed as the world’s fastest microprocessor ever. And to make it even better and more appealing, the Power6 chip is also environment-friendly since it uses up less electricity. The power6 clocks in at 4.7GHz bearing an 8MB cache together with the 790 million transistors on its 65nm. Speed is guaranteed with the 300Gbps internal bandwidth provided for it. With its kind of speed IBM said it is capable of downloading the whole iTunes catalogue in a mere 66 seconds…amazing!

The new Power6 is able to deliver this kind of performance because of the improved features. The enhancement includes the manner by which instructions are executed within the chip by keeping the pipeline stages static. Another thing is that the chunks of operations that must be completed in one cycle of the clock. These improvements make the chip faster thus allow reduced energy consumption.

The introduction of this new power chip however has raised some new concerns like carbon emissions. IBM put this to rest because the equivalent of 30 SunFire v890s can be integrated in just one unit of IBM System p570 that runs the Power6 processor and as a result can save on the energy cost by almost £50, 000.
