BT or British Telecom has some good news for the elderly as well as persons with disabilities who are into technology, specifically laptops. They developed what they called as the BT Balance – an adaptor that eliminates the need for a mouse or a keyboard each time the laptop is used. So you’ll wonder how the laptop’s applications can be accessed. Well, for sure by now you are already familiar with the motions-sensing technology…the one used in the Nintendo Wii. The BT Balance will make use of this motion sensing technology specifically using the accelerometer chip, which identifies the motions and converts it to the navigation screen.

As an adaptor the BT Balance can just be connected to the laptop or tablet PC by using a USB. And by moving the device – tilting and rotation, point as well as point and shoot type of actions, laptop users can easily navigate the program.

This technology is still being developed at BT’s Ipswich labs, under their Age and Disability Research programme. Head of the age and disability research at BT, Adam Oliver said “The technology has obvious implications for those who are disabled or elderly and have difficulty using a fiddly laptop keyboard or mouse”. Furthermore, he said that this technology is just easy to use because they simplified its use and it’s more like reading a book the only difference is that it is in a 3-D format.
