Motorola

It’s not only Apple and Nokia that have been busy these last few days. Motorola was likewise much occupied in expanding its empire. Yes . . . Motorola is bigger by one more company. This renowned handset maker has recently acquired Symbol Technologies Inc – a major technology company that’s based in Long Island. The deal went through after negotiations that took a year and a half. Symbol acceded to Motorola’s offer to buy them out for $15 per share, equaling to a $3.9 billion deal.

Symbol Technologies was founded in 1975 and became widely recognized for producing bar-code scanners. After that they also tried their hands on wireless technology as evidenced by the product they released in the form of a mobile gadget sporting a scanner. So aside from the merging of two names, you will also witness the coming together of two technological expertise.

A lot of changes for both companies are foreseen in the near future – some good while some bad. One advantage is that, employees from both companies will be able to have the facility to move to and from their respective bases. A development in engineering and sales is likewise foreseen. The drawback? There could be some job losses in divisions that overlap like human resources, accounting and information technology, but it’s only a handful. The products produced by Symbol will also eventually take on the Motorola name except for some.

So with their combined expertise we can only expect more technological surprises from Motorola.
