There are reports that say Sony might not be able to realize its plan to produce 4 million PS3s this year because of blue laser diodes shortages. These diodes are needed in the Blu-ray Disc pick-up heads. Sony however announced last week that it will ship 2 million units of the much awaited PlayStation 3 consoles on November. Sony has also made it clear that they are still going to launch additional 2 million PS3s by the end of the year.
Here is the statement by Sony Computer Entertainment America about the PS3 shortage reports: “Unfortunately Kaz Hirai's comments in the recent GameSpot interview regarding PlayStation 3 production were misunderstood. We are still on schedule to ship 2 million units for our mid-November 2006 launch and additional 2 million units by the end of the year for a total of 4 million units.”
Up until now, Sony has not yet confirmed Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Kaz Hirai’s statement that Sony has not yet started full scale production of the PS3. Last year, Microsoft started its production of the Xbox 360 only 69 days before its launching and this led to an enormous Xbox 360 shortage. Will Sony share Microsoft’s experience? Maybe yes, but maybe no considering PS3’s too pricey compared to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. The two million PS3s might just be enough for gamers who plan to buy PS3 this year.

I would be less worried about inventory to purchase and more concerned about Warranty claims.
How anyone would consider buying a PS3 without atleast 3 Year factory warranty is beyond me.
I think that the ps3 is gonna be a piece of crap. People are going to be clue less when they hear blu ray technology. The 360 is a lot better and it had high def compared to blu ray. The system is going to be overpriced and is goin to be a waste of money.
The Ps3 is a beauty for type of machinery. I am only until now a Sony Fanboy. I both respect and admire Xbox360 and Wii; however, fact is that the Ps3 is a much stronger and better tool for gaming, movie, music, and networking than both 360 and Wii. High price? Quit bit-chin' because you aint the one buying! And no one knows about Blu Ray? Well 4 out of 5 major Flims Studio do. Plus what type idiot buys without doing research on the product he/she is buying?
I agree with the third comment. Nintendo and the Wii-wii console will ultimately fail. Nintendorks the world over are blind to the fact that Nintendo has a crappy 3rd party support library of games. It's what happened to the N64 and the Gamecube. Unless gamers everywhere suddenly embrace the next Pokemon game or Mario Party 143 the system will fail and everyone will look once again to the good systems, Sony or Microsoft. Burn in Hell Nintendo and fanboys. Come mierda!
I am a playstation fan but this is uncalled for. there is reason that they haven't even started production yet with an even more powerful system than the xbox.
Yes there is a reason or three:
Low yield on diodes for blu-ray, low yields on Cell processor, low productivity from ISV's.
PS3 is low yield (IE: quality issues), but hey buy one and find out for your self.....Bah ha ha ha .. oh! ha ha ha! This guy paid... $600 Console + $100 (Game) + $30 (HDMI Cable) ... He paid $700 to play one game... and it....and it ... broke! Wa hahahaha! Ba hahaha ha! What a dork!
