Apple Follow Dell’s Move to Recall Batteries

More than a week ago, Dell announced that it will recall more than four million laptop batteries that could possibly overheat and cause fire. Now Apple is making the same move, however, it will only recall 1.8 million Sony lithium-ion laptop batteries for the same reason that they might cause fire. This decision by Apple makes the company’s battery recall the second largest computer-related recall in the US history.

The defective batteries were equipped to different PowerPC-based iBooks and PowerBook models sold from October 2003. They were also sold individually for about $130. Only 9 notebook computer batteries were reported to have overheated; two of them caused minor burns, but Apple like Dell wants to ensure safety of consumers more than anything else. Apple urges users of such defective batteries to stop using the battery and contact the company’s customer service for free replacement of the battery.

Like Dell, Apple believes such recall won’t cause any trouble to the company’s financial standing; however, Sony stated that the recalls of two of the largest names in the industry could cost the company 20-30 billion yen or about $172-258 million.
