Algeria Qualifies for the 2010 World Cup

Algeria qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in a match held Khartoum, Sudan with a 1-0 win over Egypt a few minutes ago.

Anter Yahia was the one who granted his team this victory through a goal that he scored during the first half of the match by taking advantage of a fault by Egypt's defenders

Algeria is the only Arab Country that will be representing the Arab World in the 2010 World Cup. This is the third time that Algeria will be present in the World Cup, they were there in 1982, 1986 and now they will be in South Africa in 2010.

Congratulations to Algeria and hard luck to Egypt.

The African World Cup is drawing near and things are heating up fast! Right now the games are on as to which country and team will qualify for the much-awaited sporting event. Egypt and Algeria are two of the countries that vying for the World Cup. However, these two countries are not on the best terms when it comes to this event because 20 years ago, a brutal riot between the two teams occurred when Egypt won in 1-0 score against Algeria. Since then, none of them has qualified for the coveted Cup.

The moment of truth is going to take place in the 80,000-capacity Cairo Stadium on Saturday. I�m sure all the fans are all excited about this World Cup qualifying game.

]]> As I�ve said, emotions are already getting high because according to reports, three players from Algeria�s national football team were hurt when some people threw stones on their bus when they arrived in Cairo on Thursday. It was even reported that one of the players were hospitalized because of his injuries. That�s so bad!

Loyalists of either team are also using the internet to show people what they think. The web is flooded with images of burning flags, insults, and a lot more!

FIFA officials have yet to reveal their plans regarding these incidents or what they�re going to do at the qualifying game.

Roger Federer Wins Masters Title, His First Win as a Dad

They say that children have a way of changing a person�s priorities. And this seems to be the case with Tennis� Number 1 Roger Federer. Although he still wants to finish as No.1, there will be some changes in his commitment to the game. Federer says the arrival of his twin girls, Myla and Charlene, makes him want to be the best parent he can. At this moment, he can�t be there most of the time to take care of his babies. Most of the responsibility falls on his wife Mirka who gave birth to the twins last month. According to Federer after the US Open and until the end of the year, he will just take things easy, be more of a Dad, and decide then what his game plan for next year will be.

]]> Anyway, the joy of being a father is showing as Roger Federer came up with dominant first set on Sunday. He had a 6-1, 7-5 success over Novak Djokovic. For this he got the Cincinnati Masters title. It�s his very first victory since becoming a Dad, which just makes it all sweeter and more memorable.

He said, �That�s the special part, especially winning for the first time as a dad. It gets me going emotionally a little bit because I know it�s been a wonderful summer.�

Stephen Strasburg Joins the Nationals in a $15.1 Million Deal

Who is Stephen Strasburg? This name is suddenly making waves in the baseball world. He is the top pick in the June draft and this is his first foray into Major League Baseball. He will be playing for the Washington Nationals. Being the top draft, Stephen Strasburg is given a great contract with the Nationals. With his agent Scott Boras, Strasburg signed on a $15.1 million deal, breaking the record of the highest amount paid to a draft pick which is $10.5 million to Mark Prior by Chicago Cubs in 2001. The $15.1 million is broken as $7.5 signing bonus, $2 million annual salaries for 2010, $2.5 million in 2011, $ 3 million in 2012, and $400,000 prorated share of major league salary for the present season. I must say he signed the deal just in the nick of time!

]]> What does Stephen Strasburg have that Washington Nationals chose him as the No.1 overall draft pick? Although he has never played major league baseball, Strasburg has quite a start in the game. He is superb when it comes to pitching. His right-handed capability has earned him the Golden Spikes Award being the top player when he was still in college. He showed the way for the NCAA Division I pitchers with his 1.32 earned-runs and 195 strikeouts in 109 innings. Due to his talent, he was the only college player who was chosen to play for the US Baseball Team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Stephen Strasburg is very glad to be picked by the Nationals. This is his statement to ESPN, �It feels awesome. I got a little nervous there for a while that it might not happen, but I feel very blessed. I�m not sure of the plan right now. They said they�d bring me up for the media. After five years we are finally going to witness another showmanship of skills and talents in the Olympic Games that will officially commence on August 8, 2008. Lucky are those who can get to witness the sports event live in Beijing, China. For us who cannot go there, we can only be content by watching live telecast on TV. But if you don�t have much time to sit down and watch TV, you can always browse through YouTube. 77 countries all over Asia, Africa and the Middle East will be able to view the clips on the Beijing, Olympics. According to the announcement by the International Olympic Committee on Monday, clips can be viewed at the YouTube channel youtube.combeijing2008 starting August 6.

The clips that to be shown on YouTube will be produced by the Olympic Broadcasting Services, so unauthorized videos will be pulled out by YouTube management and Google. This will be accomplished using the latest VideoID technology.

In the U.S. only NBC has the right to broadcast the Olympics events. The company will also provide 2000 hours of live content on the Web. In order to bring quality content online, NBC went into partnership with giant Microsoft.

Venus Williams beat her sister Serena 7-5 6-4 and won her fifth Wimbledon trophy.

]]> Serena dominated the start of the opening set, but she repeatedly failed to deliver that killer blow to her older sister, missing out on four break points in the first set alone!
A bit of errors were to Venus' advantage ... in the ninth game Serena accidentally yelled no in the middle of a point when the ball was still in play.
The girls were asked to reply the ball, but Serena refused to do so giving the point and the 5-4 advantage to her older sister!

Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams are going head to head at the 2008 Ladies' Championship at one of the biggest Tennis tournaments, Wimbledon.

Serena was frank about her opponent: "She's a tough opponent. I think she'll be the toughest person I've played. I'm excited."
Not the same can be said of their dad though! He doesn't have the stomach to watch them battle it out!

Richard Williams plans to fly home before the final. He claimed he won't even watch the match on television! He said: "Emotionally it is too difficult for me to watch my daughters play," he said. "I would go nuts."

So, this isn't the first time the sisters go head to head! this will be their seventh career Grand Slam final against each other.

Federer and Ivanovic To Compete in the Olympics

This year�s Olympic Games is just about ready to roll. There�s just one month to go before we get fascinated by the splendid sportsmanship of athletes around the world. Each country is busy readying its roster of athletes. The players for Tennis have already been unveiled. Roger Federer and Ana Ivanovic are two of the most distinguished players selected to compete at the Beijing Olympics.

]]> Federer is the leading personality in the men�s division and Ivanovic for the women�s. Out of the top 20 men in tennis, 17 of them will play in Beijing. Ivanovic is also the leader among the top 18 women tennis players for the Olympics.

The list was released by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The list already includes the names of those who will play in the singles and doubles. We sure have to watch out for all of them when the tournament runs from August 10-17.

NBA Sonics Heading Out to Oklahoma for Good?

Are you a fan of the NBA team The Seattle Sonics?
Well, here�s some bad news, starting next year 2009, the Sonics will be playing home games no longer in Seattle but in Oklahoma City. Yup, your favorite team is leaving town. Together with the move, the players of the team will have a new nickname and will play under a different mascot. Almost everything will be different from now on. The name �Sonics� will be staying put in Seattle.

]]> What precipitated this move? Well, it seems that after being ignored and not getting any support from the public and government to improve the KeyArena, the Sonics have finally had enough. KeyArena has been the home of Sonics when it was founded in 1967. To be released from the bond of the stadium lease, NBA assented to reimburse $75 million to the city of Seattle. Clay Bennett, owner of the Sonics, will pay $45 million immediately to the city government. He will pay the $30 million in 2013 under the condition that the Washington State Legislature refurbishes the KeyArena and Seattle doesn�t get a new team.

Sounds like the key parts of the deal are all in NBA�s favor.

Tiger Woods Wins U.S. Open Playoff

Tiger Woods proves himself once again as the king of the gold course as he takes home the cup for the 108th U.S. Open Playoff. This win is in fact Woods� third U.S. Open title and this is the 14th championship he won throughout his golf career. He is now only four championships short from achieving the 18 championship record set by his childhood hero Jack Nicklaus. Woods made the win with the two-putt par from 20 feet on the 19th hole. He got this one over his opponent Rocco Mediate who missed the 20-foot par putt he had to make. Monday�s tournament was a close one, both Woods and Mediate put up a great fight until the last hole. And in the end it was Woods who triumphed.

]]> But at the end of the game, both players stated their admiration for the other. Woods found it cool that his opponent, 45-year-old Mediate, goes into his own world when he was about to take a shot, but after that he�s again very sociable, talking and having a great time. What Mediate said about Tiger Woods is this, �Tiger is unreal.� The uncanny thing about Monday�s tournament was that, both of them wore red T-shirt.

Many people showed up to watch the match; both players having their share of fans cheering for their bet to win.

Club World Cup Coming to UAE in 2009 and 2010

Club World Cup for the years 2009 and 2010 will be held in UAE, as announced by FIFA on Tuesday. Several countries made a bid on the said event, but FIFA placed its favor on UAE. Australia, Japan, and Portugal were the rival bidders for the said event. FIFA stated that the reason they chose UAE to be the venue is because UAE gave a very attractive proposal and that they want to have a change. Likewise, the December time slot made UAE a very suitable venue. It is also the organization�s desire to take the Cup to other continents and countries. For 2011 and 2012, Club World Cup will return to Japan which has hosted the said event since 2005.

]]> The organization didn�t want to bring the event to Europe since it is already saturated with much club football. IT was also announced at the conference that Trinidad and Tobago will be the one to host the 2010 women�s under-17 World Cup, Colombia for the under-20 World Cup in 2011, and Mexico for the 2011 under-17 World Cup.

Justine Henin Retires While No. 1

Tennis Number 1 Justine Henin retires! Maybe some of you are as surprised as I am by this news. Justine�s announcement came strictly out of the blue, especially that the French Open is just 2 weeks away. She made her intention known at a conference last Wednesday. Justine was firm in her decision and it looks like she�s really putting an end to her glorious career immediately. She was resolute as she spoke to the press for nine minutes. Not once did she lose her composure. She said that she had thought long and hard about retirement since last year and the decision was made after her match in Berlin. By retiring while presently on the No. 1 spot, Justine is leaving with her head held high.

]]> At 25, Justine had already won seven Grand Slam singles titles making her the No. 1 ranked tennis player. Last year was a great one for Henin, but this year is not. Burnout is the most likely reason for her early retirement. She no longer feels motivated to put in long hours for her training and only wants to concentrate on her personal life.

New York Knicks Gets Mike D�Antoni As Coach

New York Knicks has a new coach in the person of Mike D�Antoni. D�Antoni previously coached the Phoenix Suns up until the team was cast out from the NBA playoffs. D�Antoni signed the deal with the New York Knicks just last Tuesday. The deal involves $24 million for a four-year contract. After the Suns, it is going to be one challenging task for him to take on the Knicks since this team has suffered seven seasons of losses. This team hasn�t won a single playoff round since 2000. It is really going to be such a task to turn things around for the New York team. Among the candidates for the job, Mike D�Antoni is the perfect one according to New York Knicks President Donnie Walsh.

]]> D�Antoni is known in the industry for his �Seven Seconds or Less� offense strategy, as what he used when he was with the Suns. Whether that will still be the policy in his new team is still not clear. Walsh�s request though was for the team to focus more on building a strong defense. All he is promising is this, �we're going to play hard and we're going to be exciting�.

D�Antoni and Walsh have had time to take a look at the roster; however, they�re not voicing out their thoughts on the subject. But the players who seem to fit D�Antoni�s style are Jamal Crawford, Quentin Richardson, and Nate Robinson. There�s no official word about this topic yet.
