venus williams

The Williams sisters have fought it till the end!
Venus Williams beat her sister Serena 7-5 6-4 and won her fifth Wimbledon trophy.

Serena dominated the start of the opening set, but she repeatedly failed to deliver that killer blow to her older sister, missing out on four break points in the first set alone!
A bit of errors were to Venus' advantage ... in the ninth game Serena accidentally yelled no in the middle of a point when the ball was still in play.
The girls were asked to reply the ball, but Serena refused to do so giving the point and the 5-4 advantage to her older sister!

Justine Henin

Tennis Number 1 Justine Henin retires! Maybe some of you are as surprised as I am by this news. Justine’s announcement came strictly out of the blue, especially that the French Open is just 2 weeks away. She made her intention known at a conference last Wednesday. Justine was firm in her decision and it looks like she’s really putting an end to her glorious career immediately. She was resolute as she spoke to the press for nine minutes. Not once did she lose her composure. She said that she had thought long and hard about retirement since last year and the decision was made after her match in Berlin. By retiring while presently on the No. 1 spot, Justine is leaving with her head held high.

Golf is a sport that is dominated by men. There only a handful of women who are known in this sport. And it is even sad to say that some of these women are not known for their ability in the sport, they are recognized just because they have sex appeal. One of these women in the golfing world is Natalie Gulbis. Well, if you haven’t heard of her name associated with golf, then you probably heard of her as being a model for various calendars, including FHM. She also has her own Reality Show.

If you are a fan of famous Tennis player Martina Hingis, you will definitely enjoy these photos of her :)

"I find this accusation so horrendous, so monstrous. I am frustrated and angry. I believe that I am absolutely, 100 percent innocent. I have never taken drugs."

This shocked tennis fans around the world ... a double surprise! Not a happy one either!

Justine Henin

After defeating Serena Williams, Justine Henin moved on to her next opponent, no other than Serena’s sister Williams. In the match with Serena, many said that Henin just got lucky, but with her defeating Venus Williams she proves herself to be one fierce tennis player to contend with. Last Friday Henin conquered Venus in the US Open semi-finals in a 7-6, 6-4 score. She is the first one to defeat both Williams’ sisters in a major event, the US Open and moved on for the win.

Justine Henin

We cannot anticipate totally who will dominate in the clash between the confident current no.1 Justine Henin and formerly no.1 ranked home favorite Serena Williams, but Henin playing the US Open exceptionally good. Making brilliant play when she wrong-footed Williams to end a point in the second set and claimed she was lucky by her opponent.

Maria Sharapova lost to 18-year old Polish player Agnieska Radwanska in last Saturday’s US Open Championship. It was at the Arthur Ashe Stadium that Maria Sharapova submitted defeat to the 18-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska with the 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 score. Sharapova had a good start but in the next sets Radwanska dominated the game. This might be her embarrassing defeat yet but Sharapova shows character, as she offers no excuses for it. She was defeated in the game and that was that. It simply was not a good year for her.

Rafael Nadal got the French Open title, but this time the Wimbledon goes to his opponent Roger Federer. It is really a sweet victory for Federer that after his final forceful overhead smash, he dropped to his knees and rolled to ground with tears in his eyes. With a quick change of clothes of white pants, white vest and white monogrammed blazer with its gold trim, Federer accepted his fifth Wimbledon trophy. This is the again the only time that someone won 5 straight Wimbledon after Bjorn Borg in 1976 to 1980. The match that was held on July 8 at the All England Club in London went for 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Aren’t you curious on how the Roland Garros Tournament came also to be known as the French Open Tournament? To know about it, how about taking a tour back in time? Not an actual tour, just a virtual one. Tennis was only imported to France way back in the latter part of the 19th century. It was only a national event that time but in 1925 it was established as an international event. It was after World War I that French tennis gained attention. It was the victory of four Frenchmen – Jacques Brugnon, Jean Borotra, Henri Crochet and Rene Lacoste, against America in 1927 that necessitated a new stadium for games to be held.

Rafael Nadal during Roland Garros

A new record is once again set during the French Open or Roland Garros Tournament, with Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal winning against Swiss player Roger Federer, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. It certainly is a sweet victory for Nadal as he wins a three in a row French Open title. Nadal is the only player to do so after Bjorn Borg won three straight in 1980.

The Acura classic

Two of the famous names in women’s tennis Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova will be joining one of the world’s largest women’s tennis event, no other than the Acura Classic this coming July 28 to August 5, scheduled at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. The Acura classic will for sure make its mark because this 24th time will be the last time it will be held since Promotion Sports. Inc, already sold it to the WTA for $1.34 million. So having these two tennis greats will be a treat for spectators in the Acura Classic.
