Maria Sharapova once again proves her prowess in the court as she wins at the Qatar open. Victory is as sweet for this Russian tennis player as she garners her 18th career title by defeating opponent Vera Zvonavera with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-0. The 2008 Australian Open, her third Grand Slam title is certainly another sweet victory for this 20 year old Russian. Last Saturday she defeated Ana Ivanovic at 7-5, 6-3, just dropping 10 services points during the game. Sharapova was at her best form during the match, never losing her focus in the game that made her win in the 7 matches. This is a great success for her especially after the setbacks she had suffered in her previous matches, particularly last year when she suffered a shoulder injury. Her win has gladdened a lot of people especially the Russian press. One newspaper gave her encouraging words and another daily newspaper called her the pride of the Russian nation.

The 18-year-old russian tennis player Maria Sharapova launches her bid to become world No.1 next year at the Australian Women's Hardcourts event.

World No.4 Maria Sharapova won three titles this year - Tokyo, Doha and Birmingham - but failed to add any Majors to go with her 2004 Wimbledon crown.

She was in striking distance of being world No.1 but ultimately finished fourth, her lowest ranking of the year, and is out to improve on that in 2006.

Top seed Maria Sharapova struggled to defeat Russian Maria Kirilenko Tuesday at the JPMorgan Chase Open in California.

Sharapova had not played since the semi-final appearance at Wimbledon. She was forced out of the Acura Classic in San Diego last week with a strained lower back.
Even though Sharapova triumphed in the first meeting with Kirilenko, the sloppyness was very obvious during the match.
