Ronaldinho, European Footballer of the Year

Ronaldinho is set to be awarded European Footballer of the Year on Monday, BBC reported on Sunday.
The Barcelona and Brazilian playmaker has already claimed the Fifa and FIFpro World Player of the Year gongs and he is now favourite to win the Ballon D'Or, which is voted for by European football journalists selected by French magazine France Football.

The award 'The Ballon D'Or' which is widely accepted to be the highest accolade available to a player playing his trade in Europe, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Ballon D'Or was first won by Stanley Matthews in 1956 while George Best won it in 1968.

Michael Owen Moves to Newcastle United

England striker Michael Owen agreed to sign a four-year contract to join Newcastle United, ending his time at Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old Footballer passed his medical and completes his move on Wednesday for a fee of more than $27.11 million.
He would have preferred to return to his former club but Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez appeared reluctant to buy him back.
Owen joined Real last August after eight seasons at Liverpool in which he scored 158 goals in 297 matches, and was named European Footballer of the Year in 2001.

Zinedine Zidane To Rescue French Football Team

Zinedine Zidane surprised football audiences around the world by announcing he was coming out of international retirement to rescue France's wavering national team in their struggle to qualify for the World Cup 2006.
The return of the former World Footballer of the Year will be crucial.
With him, the French team gains an extra weight and an extra threat for the team's rivals.
Zidane has played 93 times for the national team scoring 26 goals including two goals in the 1998 World Cup final win against Brazil.

Beckham to Extend Real Madrid Contract

David Beckham

England football team captain David Beckham is going to extend his contract at Real Madrid by two years till 2009.
The 30-year-old, who has often said he is enjoying his time at the Spanish giants and would like to end his career there, asked club president Florentino Perez for the extension.

Beckham signed a four-year contract in June 2003 after being transferred from Manchester United for 35 million euros.

Ronaldo to Stop Brazil Career after World Cup 2006

Striker Ronaldo said it would be his last year with the Brazilian National Team in the Fifa World Cup 2006 in Germany. It would be his fourth world cup participation, and he feels he has to give a chance to the new football players finding their way in Brazil.
The Brazilian star still has four years with Real Madrid, and will probably end his career when his contract with the Spanish team expires.

The Football World Cup 2006 Qualification Process “Asia”

The 32 nations were drawn into eight groups of four teams. The winners Iran, Kuwait, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Uzbekistan, Japan and Bahrain moved on to the Final Stage which will start in February 2005.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, while the two third placed teams meet in a home and away play-off to decide who will face the fourth-place team from the North America, Central America and the Caribbean Zone in a two-leg play-off with the winner qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany.
