Firas Mela is a 36 year old ex-swimming champion who is now a very high ranking sporting official in Syria. It seemed to many that his days as a swimmer were over as he got older and stopped competing but they were wrong. Mela who retired from competitive swimming five years ago has decided to do the unthinkable, he will swim non stop from the beaches of Cyprus to those of Syria! This trip is estimated to be 110KM and will take Mela at least 24 hours to complete.

Asafa Powell set a world record in the men's 100 meters in Greece, Tuesday, clocking 9.77 seconds.
The Jamaican 22-year-old beat Tim Montgomery's previous record of 9.78 set in Paris in September 2002 to become the fastest man ever over the distance.
Montgomery's record already was at risk because he faces doping charges.

At only 19, she won her first gold medal after winning the 800-meter in the Mediterranean games. Two years later she scored a world record for women at the same game.
