It was announced last Sunday that former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova won’t make it to the Rogers Cup finals due to fatigue. She joined Wibledon champion Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne and former number one tennis player Venus Williams in the list of Roger Cup’s no-shows. Because of this Women’s Tennis Association decided to withhold $150,000 from Sharapova’s bonus given at the end of the season.
That’s a big sum of money for common folks but probably it’s not a big deal for Sharapova as she remains the highest paid woman athlete in the world according to Sports Illustrated magazine. It is said that Sharapova is earning around £13.4 million per year! Thanks to her product endorsements where most of her income came from. However Sharapova, now seeded 2nd behind Kim Clijsters of Belgium, said that winning grand slam titles is more important to her, earning lots of money was only secondary. When you win, you think of all the hard work that you put in, not the money, she noted but adds that winning all the four slams could earn her more than $100 million.
