Floyd Landis

Finally the results are out: test results of Floyd Landis’ backup urine sample shows he had abnormally high levels of testosterone during the grueling stage 17 of the Tour de France, in which he won. Because of these findings, Phonak automatically fired Landis out of the team as he has violated the team’s Code of Ethics. USA Cycling, the governing body for bicycle racing in the US, on the other hand has banned him for two years.

Although Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said that it is no longer appropriate to call Landis the champion of the 2006 Tour de France competition, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the right organization to officially take the title from Landis.

Still even after the results were revealed this Saturday, Landis claims that he is not guilty saying that the results were due to his naturally high levels of testosterone. As quoted in an AP news report, Landis said “I will fight these charges with the same determination and intensity that I bring to my training and racing. It is now my goal to clear my name and restore what I worked so hard to achieve.”

Landis is making history in the world of racing, albeit not in a way he ever wanted.
If found guilty, Landis will be the first winner to lose Tour de France title because of doping charges.
