Winning the most celebrated bicycle racing event of the year, the 2006 Tour de France, isn’t just about praises and prestige. Along with fame comes intrigue and that’s what Tour de France winner Floyd Landis is facing right now. It is said that Landis used performance-enhancing drugs to win the competition after Landis’ cycling team Phonak revealed it had received notice from the International Cycling Union that says Landis had very high levels of testosterone in his body during stage 17 where Landis won.
Testosterone is an anabolic steroid used by many athletes to gain advantage in a competition and is thus prohibited by the rules of the governing bodies of many sports. Although Landis denied allegations of doping saying that he is innocent, investigations and further tests will be made. Officially, Landis is not yet charged of doping since tests are not yet complete; however, at present, Landis is already suspended by Phonak team pending the result of the additional test.
When found guilty Landis will be fired from the team and of course, he will have to relinquish his Tour de France title and may be suspended for two years. If these happen, Landis will be the first Tour de France grand winner to lose his title due to a doping violation.
