Numbers: Nature

An estimated 7 million dolphins have been killed by the tuna industry in the Americas, over the past 50 years or so; because thousands of dolphins are trapped in tuna nets and drowned each year.

About 100 billion tons of plastic is produced each year. 3% of it is recycled. The rest eventually ends up as litter and garbage.

Since almost all plastics float, and since they last hundreds or even thousands of years, a surprisingly large percentage of those billions of tons produced per year eventually find their way to the oceans, with a wide range of consequences!

Species We Share the Planet With

Conservative estimates of the number of species of life which we share the planet with, range from 10 to 30 million.

At present, we have only formally named about 2 million forms of life, and we have detailed knowledge of only a tenth of these.

Bacteria weigh about one trillionth of a gram.
Viruses are typically 1000 times lighter still!
