And who among us doesn't love sweets? Majority of the population around the world are heavy consumers of sweets. Well, it has been published in numerous studies how too much sweets and sugar can harm one’s health. Well, let’s scrutinize sugar a little bit more. A lot of people nowadays prefer to use refined sugar because they say that it is “cleaner” than any other; but they don’t know they are voluntarily destroying their health in the process!

It is important to know that refined sugar has undergone so many processes that there’s hardly any nutrient left in it. This type of sugar that is used by many nowadays is stripped of any fiber, minerals, proteins, fats and enzymes. All you get is empty calories. As empty calories it is not of any use to our body. And it causes even more harm because the nutrients that are supposed to be used by the other cells are borrowed just to process these empty calories. This causes deficiency in the other cells, leading to their breakdown.

A new study released today gives more insight into the real score about babies who are born prematurely. The data released is based on Norwegian data carried out by Norwegian and US researchers.
Premature babies are classified as those who were born before 37 weeks. The study said that these babies were likely to experience developmental and neurological problems. Also, according to the data it is the premature baby boys who are more likely to have low mortality rate than girls.

Cell Phones and Sperm Count

If you are a guy here’s news for you, and you should take this to heart because it’s based on facts. According to a recent study, frequent use of cell phone can affect your ability to father a child. I’m not kidding. This is actually the conclusion of the study made by experts from a Cleveland Clinic. In the study they made, they found out that men who use their cell phones for more than 4 hours a day has low sperm count and the slightest visible sperm. In order words, the more time you spend on your cell, the lesser the sperm count and the higher the amount of abnormal sperm.

Parents should be warned that they could be putting their baby’s life at risk with the different baby products they expose them to. In a study recently released by the University of Washington, the researchers placed in their findings that a chemical called phthalates was found in the urine of 163 infants that were exposed to shampoo, lotion and powder. Although it is not yet proven that this chemical is doing harm to the infants, the researchers are still concerned on what might be the long term effect of these chemicals to them.

Breastfeeding

There’s a slogan being shown on TV that states “Breastfeeding is Still Best for Babies”. And do you know that this is not merely lip service because there really are lots of benefits that can be gained from breastfeeding your baby. One important thing that will benefit your baby a lot is the finding that breastfeeding may help protect against certain allergies or what they call as atopic disease. Based on the US health guideline, breastfeeding your baby exclusively for four months can help prevent the onset of atopic disease. This includes asthma, eczema and reactions to food.

Smokers can have more chance to quit their habit…in a not so agonizing way. By just a single shot the craving for nicotine is diminished. The shot is actually a vaccine that dulls the effects of nicotine in the brain so the pleasurable feeling obtained from smoke is lessened. The volunteers who were given the shot were able to quit smoking compared to those who were just given fake shots. And there is also a good effect on those volunteers who were given the vaccine because although they could not kick off the habit completely at least they smoked fewer cigarettes.

Trasylol

The US Food and Drug Administration requested Bayer AG, a company based in Leverkusen, Germany, to stop its sale of Trasylol an anti-bleeding drug. The drug is used during heart bypass surgery in order to prevent the patient from bleeding too much. Trasylol is known by another name, aprotinin. This drug obstructs the substance that melts blood clots so that blood loss would be avoided. When used in heart bypass surgery, the patient no longer requires blood transfusion.

Sexual activity is already a common thing in teenagers, but not in middle schoolers. Middle schoolers are those aging from 11-13 years old. It can be hard to think that children of these ages are already thinking of sex or are actually involved in it. But what of this news that a middle school in Maine will be making available to its students birth control services? The Portland School Committee voted 7-2, allowing the school medical workers to provide birth control pills to the girls. And the thing is the parents will never know if their kid is using birth control because they will have to sign a waiver that will enable their children to seek medical attention in school.

The abuse of prohibited drugs is one of the major concerns of countries all over the world. It is a big problem that is becoming harder and harder to combat; more so with the fact that some countries are already tolerating the use of prohibited drugs. I use the word tolerate because that’s how it seems with the establishment of legal facilities or injection site where drug users can go and inject themselves with their favorite juice whether its heroin or cocaine.

The lipstick is a part of a woman’s everyday routine, right? Rarely these days can we see a female minus her lipstick. But do you know that there are some lipsticks that can prove harmful to health because they contain more than the prescribed amount of lead. Campaign for Safe Cosmetics hired an independent laboratory to analyze several well-known brands of lipstick. And you know what they found? Out of the 33 lipsticks analyzed 61% or 20 lipstick brands had high level of lead. The safe level of lead as prescribed by FDA is 0.1 parts per million. But the lab findings show that the lead level in lipsticks is high ranging from 0.03 up to 0.65 parts per million.

Toilet training is one of the big challenges in child rearing, as some parents say. I can’t say it personally since I’m not yet a parent. Usually it takes 1 to 2 years before a child can be potty trained, or so that’s what people thought before. But it can also be made earlier than that through what they call as elimination communication. As young as 6 to 8 months parents can already start the potty training of their babies. By learning to identify the facial expressions or sounds that the baby makes when he or she needs to urinate or defecate.

Do you use your hand often in relation to your work and do you experience extreme cramps after? A cramp is defined as involuntary sustained muscle contraction or dystonia. I am asking because this study done by French researchers could be relevant to you as well as to me. As published in the magazine Neurology, the study says that there is a connection between writer’s cramps and brain abnormalities. When I read this health news I became concerned for myself and for those who use their hands regularly in tasks like writing, typing or playing the piano...Writer’s cramps does not set in immediately but after some years of using the same muscles over and over again.

All of us have encountered some really bad patches in our lives that sometimes we wish we can erase from our memory right? Permanently erasing these specific instances from our memory bank so that they won’t continue to bug us each and every time…This wish might just come true because in a study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, there is a drug being worked on that can help wipe out bad memories. The drug is called propranolol. This new drug holds a big potential, and if proven successful and effective can be a big help to victims of heinous crimes who are plagued by painful memories. The way that this drug works is a wonder because it only targets certain memories, yes only those unwanted ones, and the memories you cherish most continue to be undamaged.
