Infertility Risk for Men 35 Years and Older

When it comes to having a healthy pregnancy, it has always been a notion that it is the woman’s age that matters. The father’s age does not come into play because no matter what his age is, a man is capable of fathering a baby. Now, here comes a new discovery. There is a big risk of miscarriage if the father of the baby is already 35 years old or older. This finding was discovered in a study led by Dr. Stephanie Belloc of the Eylau Centre for Assisted Reproduction in Paris.

The finding is based on the observation done on 21,239 intrauterine inseminations or IUI. The sperm was examined carefully before it was inserted into the uterus. The researchers analyzed the sperm according to its motility and morphology. And they found out that the sperm belonging to men aged over 35 had negative effect and this effect is higher risk of miscarriage. According to Dr. Belloc, sperm belonging to older men usually have damaged DNA thus could result to conception failure.

More about this finding will be released at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona Spain.
