Genetic Mapping Shines Some Light on Autism

Autism is one of the disorders that no parent would ever want in their child. However, parents have really no way of knowing whether their offspring will be born with the disorder or not. At this point in time detection of autism can only happen when the child is already 2 or 3 years old, by means of psychological examination. Children who have this disorder show different kinds of impairment from cognitive problems, gastrointestinal problems up to behavioral problems.

A recent study participated in by various medical practitioners all over the world shows that the occurrence of autism may be detected through the genes. Through DNA testing doctors will be able to pinpoint if a child has the disorder. By being able to do so, proper and necessary steps can be done so as to arrest the most awful effect it can have on the child. There is also the possibility of recognizing babies who might be already prone to the disorder. Moreover, parents can also undergo genetic screening in order to see if they are likely to have an autistic child and for those who already have an autistic child they will know of the chances if their second child will also be a victim of autism.

This study is very beneficial for the medical world. It will also be a key towards improving the conditions of autistic children through early and appropriate treatments.

One could prevent some cases of autism through fathering babies before the age of 35.

If there is already some form of autism in the family more autistic children are very, very likely to be born.

I just had a paper published concerning paternal age as a risk factor in autism, in non-familial cases. It has a lot more links which are easily accessable.
