violent video games and kids

Scientists have tried everything to link violent video games to violent behavior with no actual scientific proof.
If you remember the Columbine massacre, then you will remember the news speaking of how these two teenagers used to play violent video games all the time. The same could be said for aggressive behavior amongst younger kinds aged 9-13.

There must be some sort of link or the gaming companies wouldn’t bother to put an age restriction on video games.

I remember the violent video games of my time…”Mortal Combat” was considered gory and bloodthirsty. But in comparison with today’s video game 15 years later, “Mortal Combat” was more like a bedtime story!

But on the other hand, scientists have proven that the brainwave activity of a child playing “Need for Speed” is the same as an athlete training for a marathon! So there must be some good to playing!

"These two studies, plus other research on video game violence all point in the same direction," researcher Craig A. Anderson, PhD, from Iowa State University, says. "It's a direction that's not unexpected, because the effects of playing violent video games look to be very similar to the effects of lots of exposure to violent TV. Basically, kids who play a lot of violent video games are at risk for becoming more violent people."

Game over!

I think the benifits of playing video games far out weigh any"stigma" one can come up with. I am an adult with ADHD, and even before the studies came out about ADD/ADHD and video games, people around me could see a difference in me after I played games for a while(I have been a gamer since I was 5) They say I seem calmer, and more stable after I play for a while, and I take my GBA with me everywhere so I don't get bored.

There have been no substantial reports that have been proven to show video games cause violence in youth. Indeed, there are as many positive results as negative - the reports seem to cater toward an individual's personal beliefs more than any other.

Ultimately, it comes down to the parents and the responsibility they put behind monitoring thier children, and not blaming thier children's behavior on an outside influence.

Zayed:

I think you are playing a dangerous game with your readers. Which of today's games make "Mortal Combat" [sic] look more like a bedtime story? Which bedtime stories do you read to your children that involve pulling the beating heart from a conquered enemy's chest? I believe the biggest problem with "violent" media is misunderstanding, and your article seems to pass off unsubstantiated opinions as if they were fact.

Who decides what is violent and what is not? I've done a lot of aggressive driving in Need For Speed, and ended up in some pretty "violent" crashes.

Like books, songs, movies, and all the other media that came before, we use video games to tell stories. Stories are art, not science. If we need PhD'ed psychologists to perform clinical studies in order to decide what sorts of stories are appropriate for ourselves and our kids, I don't think violence in video games is the real problem.

I just finished reading a report on a study done proving that playing violent video games "desensitize" one to real life violence (http://www.bocaratonnews.com/index.php?src=news&prid=17362&category=Local%20News)
but i feel that the way this study was done proves nothing yes like the report says people playing violent games had a lower physiological arousal to real life violence than people that had played non-violent games, but all that proves that by doing something you just get used to it. You could use this same method for just about anything you wanted people just get tired of the same thing over and over. Say if you had some people come in and drink a glas of orange juice and recorded how much they like and then take half those people and have them drink nothing but orange juice for a month and the half drink only milk, when you bring them back in and have them all drink a glass of orange juice the ones that drank for a month would like it less than the ones that drank milk. Yes technically that study proves its hypothesis but they failed to account for one control that over a period of time that desensitvity reverts to normal it is not a lating effect. Its not very different than your physiological reactions during a game. I could play Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion all day and my heart rate would not have as much of change as if i played Pacman all day. Oblivion is not the least violent of games out there and i dont experience dramatic changes in my heart rate, but playing Pacman i am going to have quite a dramatic jump in my heart rate every time i almost get eaten by a ghost. So in clonclusion all these "scientists" need a dramatic drop in their ignorance levels and do their job to account for all the possible variables which unles i am wrong you are supposed to do before the experiment/study is started.

violence in children is not because of videogames. The new halo3 is coming out soon and my children are begging me to buy it so i sat down and played halo2.I was suprised how addictingly fun it was!But I have to say killing aliens is not harmful at all.I sat down again and played grand theft auto:san andreas and even I felt like this was fun

I think it is absolutely ridiculous to assume that video games cause children to be violent. If you are a parent and you have not taught your child the difference between fiction and reality then that is a failure on your part as a parent. Parents are childrens' first teachers and role models and if a child learns violence from a video game then that is the parents' fault for not teaching their children right from wrong. Anyone claiming to have learned aggression from telivision or video games is just looking for an escape. They are simply trying to pass the blame to someone other than themselves. The news has violence too, in fact, the news will show violence first. So why aren't there any studies in concern to children learning aggression form the news??

I play GTA 24/7, and im the most peacefull, loving guy on earth, i skirm when i see real life blood, and hate wars, and violence. Yet i play socom, and all those violent games. My lil borther is ultra violent, but the only reason i find his violent behavior is because he is really spoiled. we both were raised differently, me with my grandmother, and him with his mother, we both were taught on different values.
is how we grow up as a child who makes us who we are.
