World Breastfeeding Week

From August 1 till August 7, more than 120 countries are celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week. This celebration, which is endorsed by UNICEF, WHO and FAO began in 1992 in commemoration of the Innocenti Declaration that aimed to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world. Says World Health Organization, over 1.5 million babies die each year because they are not breast-fed.
With this week-long celebration, all the participating countries and organization hope to increase awareness on the importance of breastfeeding.

Breast milk is still best for babies as this help prevent diarrhea, a leading cause of death among infants. It also prevents infections and many other diseases including pneumonia, asthma and diabetes. Breast milk has components essential in keeping the baby’s immune system strong enough to resist health hazards found in the environment. Moreover, studies show that breast milk’s nutritional values promote proper brain growth.
