Scientists have recently found a way that might stop obesity among humans: an anti-hunger hormone vaccine. This vaccine called “ghrelin” was found to be effective in adjusting metabolism of rats. Ghrelin made these rodents eat normally and lose weight and reduce fats in their body. While further studies may still be needed to prove that the vaccine can have similar results to humans suffering from obesity, researchers are hopeful that it can soon provide a “workable solution” to the burgeoning problem of obesity.
The researchers explain that the vaccine works by preventing the hormone ghrelin from reaching the nervous system and promoting weight gain. They say that ghrelin is responsible for regulating energy balance in our body. This hormone affects our metabolism; consequently, our appetite and weight. According to the experts when we are on a diet, our tendency is to eat more since higher levels of ghrelin are produced to slow down burning of calories and breaking down of fat in our body. As a result, we store more fat and gain weight.
