Doctors in Shanghai, China successfully separated the 11-month-old twin girls last Thursday. The Fudan University's Children's Hospital doctors described the twins’ deformity as “very rare” and called the 13-hour operation as “first of its kind” in medical history. The twins are joined from the upper chest to the lower part of the pelvis. They shared several organs including liver and digestive tract.
The twins are not yet completely safe though as they both have congenital heart disorders that call for a series of operations. Moreover, they face risks of organ failure and infection. Despite the fatal risks both of the girls are still facing, the doctors say that the operation was a success considering the fact that both of the twins survived. It’s already a miracle for one to survive, according to the hospital president Gui Yonghao. Big thanks to a group of businessmen in Taizhou, China that raised above $25,000 for the twins’ operation.
