Two Australian researchers have been awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for discovering that stomach ulcers are not only caused by stress, but by an ulcer bug, and are curable with antibiotics.
This discovery means that ulcers are no longer a chronic and disabling condition.
When they first discovered the bacterium in 1982, people were skeptical, and nobody believed them.
They will receive a gold medal and share of $US1.3 million when they are presented with their prizes at the formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10.
