Oprah Sues 50 Companies Over Illegal Use of Her Name

Oprah Winfrey is one of the biggest names in the world today, no wonder many advertisements want to use her name to get their products noticed by the public. Well, that may be good to them but Oprah is not having any of that. Oprah Winfrey together with Dr. Mehmet Oz is suing a number of companies that are illegally using their names and pictures in promoting their products. The particular product in question is the Acai Berry that is claimed to have anti-aging benefits. The companies that Oprah and Dr. Oz are suing include Monav of South Jordan, FWM Laboratories, Inc. and CPX Interactive LLC.

Aside from photos and videos, these companies also created false testimonials and endorsements from Oprah and Dr. Oz. The lawsuit was filed last Wednesday at the District Court in New York.

In the lawsuit, Dr. Oz and Oprah stated that the companies who started the Acai berry advertisements made sites with photos and videos that make it look as if Dr. Oz was endorsing the products. The companies also used meta-tags for engine optimization and even purchasing keyword sponsored links and putting banner ads on AOL. Many customers were duped into thinking that Oprah and Dr. Oz were really endorsing the products, when it fact the two don’t have any idea about it.

The charges that were filed against almost 50 companies are trademark infringement, trademark dilution, unjust enrichment, cybersquatting, and deceptive trade practices.
