Nacho Libre is one of the strangest comedies I’ve ever had the pain and pleasure of watching. The poor light, horrible picture, terrible acting and pathetic storyline makes this movie one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Yes, it’s cool! Jack Black is superbly funny and plays the part with strength and passion. It’s about a firer who lives in a Mexican orphanage who decides to leave the convent and peruse his life as a professional wrestler.
This movie is funny, and when I say funny, I mean stomach-aching funny! You’ll be watching quietly and from nowhere, you’ll burst out load in laughter. My mother thought I was insane because she passes by my room listening to outbursts of laughter every now and again.
The downside to this movie is the mood and setting. The setting is an old Mexican village and poor orphanage. The light and picture is deliberately trying to reflect the feeling inside Nacho which is very depressing throughout the movie. So if you’re looking for a flashy comedy, this isn’t for you. Its quiet, slow and depressing. I think that if you cut out about 20 minutes of funny buts then this film will be a tragedy not a comedy. But if you’re looking for something “less Hollywood” then this film is for you.
I recommend it if you have nothing else to watch.
