I am a Scientologist, and I've given birth 7 times - 5 times without pain killers or epidurals. We have always requested silence - meaning, specifically, no unecessary words - from the doctors, midwives, and nurses. If *I* feel the need to scream, yell, cry, whatever, then of course I do that. However, we don't want the nurses and doctors chitchatting and going on and on and on about anything and everything when I'm in pain.

Actually, Scientologists tend to stay quiet whenever anyone in the area is in pain - it's a basic principle in "Dianetics" that words spoken during moments of pain or unconsciousness can have a post-hypnotic affect on the person later in life. So we keep it quiet unless speaking is absolutely necessary whenever someone is hurt.

But, really, it's all about respecting the wishes of the laboring mother.
