cleopatra

This week was a very interesting and full one for Archaeologists in the Arab world!
In Egypt, treasures were found as diggers were searching for the lost tomb of Cleopatra.
Antiquities chief Zahi Hawass announced that an alabaster head of Cleopatra and a mask belonging to Mark Antony have been found near Alexandria.
Wait! There's more! A bronze statue of Goddess Aphrodite and a headless royal statue from the Ptolemaic dynasty were also found, in addition to 20 bronze coins stamped with Cleopatra's face! That's a big find!

More interesting stuff after the jump ...

The other night Haifa Wehbe and Assi Hillani held a LIVE concert in downtown Beirut and the attendance was unprecedented!
Around 700.000 people gathered to celebrate and watch two of the most famous Lebanese stars perform.
Such attendance, if not controlled and organized, turns things upside down!
Instead of the concert being a huge success, some called it a 'disaster'!
People were pushing each other, the singers couldn't concentrate on their performances and were even mobbed by the people! Later, even power cables were cut and the electricity just went out! Ouch!

ground zero

Being a Jordanian living abroad, makes me search for anything innovative from Jordan on the net and today i came across something that I've added to my favorites and will keep checking religiously!
You're gonna love the first Arabic online comedy, Ground Zero.
Ground Zero is a very lite comedy show presented by two Jordanian guys, Mike V.Derderian and Mohammad Jaradat.
Every episode, which is broadcast on the Arab World's first video sharing service Ikbis, consists of three parts; Doblage, Lost in Translation and Pirates of Down Town Amman: The Curse of the One JD DVD.

jenna bush and her hubby henry

In a small town in Texas, today is a hectic yet happy day for all it's 800 residents!
The town of Crawford is on it's heels and toes for a very important wedding taking place today, the wedding of their most famous son's daughter; Jenna Bush, the daughter of US President George Bush!
Here's a glimpse of what the town is like and what's all the excitement looks like:

Gift shops are selling ceramic mugs with a picture of Jenna and her soon-to-be hubby Henry. They're also selling magnets, mouse-pads and teddy bears commemorating the event! Other shops are giving away punch and wedding cake today. And an 18-foot angel statue that overlooks the main intersection in town is wearing a white veil and holding a bouquet of flowers! Cute!

texas sinkhole

A scary thing happened in a small town in Texas a couple of days ago; a sinkhole appeared in the ground and swallowed everything above it!
The sinkhole, which is a hole formed in the ground when the surface of the ground collapses, started on Wednesday when the soil started to sink in and managed to swallow up anything in it's way!
Until today, it's grown into a huge crater (183m X 46m) and has swallowed oil tanks and barrels, tires, telephone poles and several vehicles. Today, it has closed in on the surrounding houses around it!
Residents of Daisetta watched as trees and cars that were close to the mouth of the crater tumbled in!

Omar Khayrat concert in Abu Dhabi

Omar Khayrat is a name that carries connotations of great talent and creativity no matter where you go in the world and whilst political Ambassadors often give their countries a bad name Omar Khayrat has done nothing but bring pride to the entire Arab world. His audiences in Abu Dhabi were keen to show their appreciation of his greatness as they greeted his entrance to the stage with warm applause. As always he did not disappoint.

Ajman City Centre

It is sometimes healthy to ask yourself ‘would I have done the right thing?’ when you see a noble act committed. And I couldn’t help but ask myself that exact question when I hear about the two migrant workers who found a bag containing 400,000 dirhams in cash and 1,700,000 in blank cheques whilst cleaning Ajman City Centre. The worker who found the bag immediately handed it in to security who gave it in to the police!

Umm Kalthoum Necklace

Umm Kalthoum is admittedly a legendary and internationally acknowledged artist and it is hard to put a price on such talent and such creativity. However, when one is presented with an item that once belonged to someone awe inspiring like Umm Kalthoum it is hard not to want to own it. An unknown UAE resident was put under the spell of Umm Kalthoum’s pearl necklace that was once presented to her by the late Sheikh Zayed and paid a hefty 5.1 million dirhams ($1.39 million) for it at a Dubai auction!

GMT timezones

Somehow the world has adapted to working with GMT as the universal time standard, even TV channels use it! However, at a recent conference in Saudi Arabia some Muslim scholars decided that we should all scrap GMT and adopt Saudi time as Mecca is the true center of the Earth. The reasons for this are endless including the fact that as Muslims we face that direction at least five times a day for prayer and that Mecca is actually in perfect alignment with magnetic north. To be honest, and as a devout Muslim, I truly disagree. GMT has been around forever and now is not the time to change it! Obviously Mecca has it’s importance to us all as Muslims, but it is important as a religious item and not a geographical location.

Facebook a killer

Any of you who have read my previous article on Facebook will know that I simply love it, but there are a lot of people out there who find Facebook to be a killer. Literally, In Saudi Arabia quite a while ago a woman was beaten and shot to death after she was caught using Facebook to chat with men –obviously a big no-no. Many have been unhappy about the use of the social networking site in Saudi Arabia especially Ali Al-Maliki who has clarified that he feels that Facebook is a ‘is a door to lust’.

Moai Statue Ear

We have all heard of the legendary concept of ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ and this concept is implemented in some countries around the world. Well the Mayor of Easter Island claims that the ear of a Finnish tourist should be cut off as he broke of the ear of a priceless and ancient Moai statue!
The tourist attempted to get a piece of the statue, which is carved out of volcanic rock, as a souvenir.

The appointment of Thurgood Marshall as the first African American Supreme Court Judge in 1967 was a mile stone for African American’s everywhere, and today women are experiencing a similar breakthrough in the UAE. On Wednesday the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa appointed Kholoud Ahmad Jouan Al-Dhaheri as a judge in the Emirates. This was a first in the UAE but not in the Arab world after for example Bahrain also appointed a female judge not too long ago.
