Football Players Exempt From Ramadan?!
In a very controversial announcement by the Islamic Association in Germany it was announced that football players will be exempt from fasting during Ramadhan where they have to play a game! They claim that Islam encouraged us to take care of our bodies and being able to eat and drink is essential for those football players who are running around during a game. Perhaps more controversially is the fact that the Azhar in Cairo has supported this fatwa.
Now I'm in no position to make any comments regarding whether or not this is correct according to the Qur'an and Sunna because I don't have the necessary knowledge. However, I can understand that for these players football is at the end of the day their job and people who -for example- have to travel for their jobs are exempt from fasting so why shouldn't they? Also Islam isn't a religion that makes things difficult for its followers and Allah is described as 'The Merciful' so to me the decision seems to make sense. It remains to be seen whether the rest of the Muslim community will take this fatwa and apply it to their players!
