The Alchemist: A Tale of Dreams, Achievements and Treasures

By Mariam on Jul 21, 2010

‘The Alchemist is a beautiful book about magic, dreams and the treasures we seek elsewhere and then find on our doorstep.’ - Madonna.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is a story about Santiago an Andalusian shepherd boy who dreams of travelling the world in search of hidden treasures, and one day decides to fulfill his dream. He leaves his only belongings behind, his sheep, and starts a long and exciting journey filled with love, danger, hope and adventure.

Written by Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian author whose books have been translated into more than 66 languages and had sold more than 100 million books worldwide, the Alchemist was a sure success. It became an international bestseller, was translated into 61 languages and more than 60 million copies were sold.

The first book I read for Coelho was ‘Eleven Minutes’, I was so in love with his writing that I read another book for him ‘By the river Piedra I sat down and wept’, which was yet another amazing book for Coelho. However, reading the Alchemist had made Paulo Coelho one of my favorite authors. The Alchemist was written in such a way that it has to keep the reader attached. The storyline is entertaining and the intelligence of Santiago who was just a shepherd was overwhelming.

The Alchemist was first published in 1988 in Portuguese, yet I only got to read it a while ago and in English but the book still managed to hold on to its power of capturing the reader. The Alchemist is an amazing book that helps people conquer their fears and search the world to achieve their dreams, it certainly made me wants to evolve my dreams and make them real.

A book written for the world as a whole, it’s a must read as it shows that no matter who you are or what you do in life, a little hope will help you fulfill your dreams.

I liked the book very much, but I was disappointed by its ending. But very educational :)
For those who want to read it, do so, and also his book about Nabi Ilyas in Baalbek was very good, even better than The Alchemist :)
    Enjoy your reading !
