Solar Flower of Buenos Aires

By H.A.R. on Oct 13, 2009

solar flower

This is the largest flower you'll ever see!
It's a gigantic metal flower, that follows the sun and closes at night!
It's powered by solar panels that make the metallic petals flex and bend with the sunlight.
The solar flower is a robotic sculpture donated to a public park in Buenos Aires by architect Eduardo Catalano.

Isn't this amazing!? This is now on my list of must-see things before I die!

It's like a monstrous satellite dish or a giant sprinkler...wish people would stop damaging the little nature left on Earth. This isn't the first time a giant metal object has been plonked in the middle of a pretty green landscape.

It is a pretty sculpture but - this park looks like most parks, the appearance of nature but stripped of all biodiversity, and the sculpture may conserve energy but by being such a consumption of resources it's like a middle finger (or your local obscene gesture of choice) to the nature in whose image it's made. The same thing could be done at 1/10th the scale and still be impressive while being much less wasteful.
