Arabic Culture Imitating Western Society

Ahl al Gharam on MBC 1

Ahl al Gharam is a Syrian Drama, that is currently airing on MBC, weekly. The show translates as the People of Love, or Family of Love, and it portrays stories that are in our Arabic society and culture. The first episode was of a couple going through a lot of trouble on their wedding day, and in the end they end up not getting married. And the most recent one is about a girl that works at a bank and meets the man of her dreams. But he falls in love with her sister and asks for her hand in marriage. These are probably subjects that are encountered a lot through the Arabic World, however I have some critisicms for the show.

First of all, everyone, I mean the actors, are trying to be so American, as like talking English, acting very, very modern. For instance, from their first encounter, friends start calling each other Habibi, Habibty, and that such. Unmarried girls arrive after midnight and their parents are greeting them so warmly as if nothing had happened. I mean has our Arabic society reached that level, or is it over exaggerated by these shows.

In my view, I have never seen or heard of a girl of a proper family go out with her friends of girls and guys and come back after midnight, with no questions from her family. And what's very annoying is the constant use of English in their dialogues. They have to insert an English word when they are talking which is so irritating, and most of the times their pronouncing is wrong. They would greet each other with the word Hi, instead of "Marhaba", or "Ahlan". It's ridiculous because even here in America, we don't greet our families with a Hi. Is the Arabic culture getting to a level that imitates Western Society?

man, i know what you mean but this is have been going since the last 10 years!! parents doesnt exist anymore and identity is lost, choices are either being recruited by islamic groups (especially if you live in poor community) or the other extreme side which many call being free, the free life style, even sleeping with your brother/ sister is cool and you r retarded if you think otherwise ... &%&^%!

Since when is it okay to sleep with one's siblings in either the Arab world or in the West? That's an exaggeration. There are good and bad things about both cultures.

i told you they are never stop acting. arab imitates the westerns. they need to finish acting dramas and their movies, like suria lebonan and the others. Ahl al Gharam is american ways and is very idoit. if i was control the arab i would banned their acting...

turkish can continue dramas and movies their really good at it. Turkish always say salam or salama.

First to "SWEDEN" .. hahah oh yeah, I was there once, and man i thought that I was in Lebanon ! hahah but i actually liked malmo it was funny :D

And over to my coment.. I haven't seen the serie yet, but I really hate when the arabs are tryin to act "american" , I mean have you ever seen a "american" who tries to be arabic?? Of course not, so be proud of your language instedd .. And for what u said about goin out without beein asked where or with who.. That is soo fake .. because all my friends back in Lebanon and even here in sweden (the arabic ones) their parents allways ask them where have u been, and they have to be home early .. so it's just a serie and thats not reality for sure ...

In the TV series shown on Arabs and the arabic society should reflect the lives of these people, so I agree with you that they exaggerate a lot. And the silly thing is when they use english words when talk , I live in sweden and the

And to come back after midnight or even go out at night is something I can forget it might be more accepted for men but not for girls, and even though I've lived here since I was 5 ,I rarely use English words when I speak Arabic.

    Jools

good for you that you live in Lebanon here in sweden people from Lebanon cant live life as they live in the westeird

LOL @ Khalid! I totally agree and see your point.

I've only seen segments and not a whole episode, so can't judge yet, but I've caught an incident or two and I see your points.

What's the need for all this BS? They think they're being cool and different?! At least pronounce the ****** word properly! They're just making fools out of themselves.

I feel sorry for the Arab world. Rapid changes to the worse, during the past decade.

P.S. If you noticed during the past three months or so, MBC has been hiring aweful translators for their movies .. not only that, but they're currently running very lame and stupid shows' previews in between their programs....

lol im an arab girl living in australia. my mother being syrian and my dad being jordanian. arrived here 5 years ago and i come back at three to four in the morning if im out clubbing. mother doesnt care as long as my phones on me and i pick up. otherwise she would freak out. point is..they arent as traditional anymore. which is excellent really because there is a level of trust that is established between both parents and their children. its not really about being American or anything like that. generations change.

omg u guys r soooo funny, seriously grow up, btw the arab world is not worthy of calling it arab any more, none of u can deny dat now days everything has become ok, wat used to be forbiden is ok now and part of being civilised, like having soooo many boy friends and not keeping your virginity till marriage, am not specifying any religion bcoz in all religions its forbiden but da point is in a few years it wud be ok for a guy to see his sis being f and for him to stand and watch and i wont be surprised if dat happend.

I love the series i've watched over and over agian i absolutely loe and i love the actors and actresses and the Syrian Drama. But i think you are correct i dont think a family who believe alot in culture and religion would allow their daughter to cum back home at a late time especially after midnight. But maybe thats what really happen as i never lived in an Arabic society but my family certainly don't allow me to cum back home late.lol

i really agree with what you are trying to say in the whole arabic society thing.i live in australia and my dad won't even let me go to my friends house by myself.with all arabic actors its true they don't know how to pronounce with properly.they say wiz instead.they also do greet each other by saying hi.the amaricans don't enen greet each other by saying marhaba or ahlan then why should they follow the amaricans if the amaricans don't follow the arab way?and yes its true the arabic actors did really over do it.they all try to hard.
