First off I LOVE Skype! Seriously, what better way to reach family and friends who live abroad for free than Skype. But Ms Oprah Winfrey has decided that it is no longer worth it to fly stars and guests over to appear on the show the ‘traditional way’ and instead has them turn on their webcams in their living rooms and log onto ‘Skype’!
It is fair enough if the odd guest is busy or cannot be flown over, but it seems like the number of people on Oprah who join her ‘via Skype’ is on the rise! To be honest it is making me so mad! It isn’t like Oprah is stuck for money or that she has been hit hard by the economic crisis (I am assuming she pays for the flights and accommodation of the guests) so I do not see how this could be about finance. I personally prefer to have the guests appear on the show as opposed to on a screen which blurs and disfigures the guests face systematically! Maybe I’m just picky though! Does it bother you?!

I think its a good thing that Oprah is using skype, this way people in other countries can have the chance to interact with oprah live! and by the way oprah is still inviting guests ... skype is just an opportunity for more people to be guests...
I love it actually. I get what you mean about the impact of hosting her guests in person, but virtually absolutely works for me. Her show will evolve remarkably.....think of the variety of people that can be reached, and convergence of the many. Imagine new types of collaborations on people stories all over the world. She's growing her tribe :)
I SOOOO agree with you and have been thinking the same thing lately. I HATE the fact that she no longer has guests on stage and uses Skype. It feels too impersonal and cheap. I hope she goes back to flying her guests out!

One day, she had Indian actors guests by Skype for their film nominated in Oscars. Obviously, they couldn't be on her show, so I don't think it's a matter of saving money. She's just trying to make a show in a different way too, using different technology, I don't see where is the problem. Finally, she' s not using it in every show.
Consider the fact that SKYPE is paying HUGE amounts of money for someone to plug their site and product. Why not use Oprah? This has absolutely NOTHING to do with her not being able to afford flying people in, and everything to do with fulfilling some daytime tv marketing commitments to a product that is obviously getting some great promotion....look how its got everyone talking about it....
