So we saw the Saudi movie ‘Menahi’ come out and get a lot of attention simply because of the fact that it is produced by Rotana and that the actors are from Saudi Arabia but does the actual movie have any substance?

Well the movie was showcased in Geneva and Paris and was in Egyptian theatres for quite a while and even made it into the Eid season with quite a stupendous success. It is as the people who worked on this movie describe it ‘commercial’ in every sense of the word and it did what it was created to do, sell well with audiences!

But will this be a launching pad for so called ‘commercial’ Saudi Arabian movies? Who knows, but I for one hope it is! I think they bring something different to the table these films. We have all seen the likes of ‘El Lemby’ crash and burn after his first commercial comedic success but maybe the Saudi Arabians have it in them to create a string of movies that help us forget our worries and just provoke a good laugh!
