In a star studded and glamorous ceremony, 10-year-old Nujood Ali was awarded "Woman of the Year" alongside nine other big names!
If you're wondering why a 10-year-old has been named Woman of The year, here's Nujood's story:
Nujood's dad pulled her out of second-grade in Sanaa and married her off to a man in his 30s! This man beat and sexually assaulted her!
Instead of staying silent and living each day at a time, Nujood rebelled against her dad and her husband and went to court with the help of a human rights lawyer, Shada Nasser.
Together they took the husband to court and finally got a divorce. Kudos!

Nujood was present at the event, which was held yesterday in Carnegie Hall in New York City, with her lawyer Nasser.

Other celebrities and popular personalities awarded are Tyra Banks, Nicole Kidman, Hillary Clinton, Chanel Chief Executive Maureen Chiquet, Jane Goodall, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, beach volleyball duo Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and artist Kara Walker.

I THINK THE FATHER AND THE HUSBAND SHOULD BE LEGALLY PUNISHED. TO MAKE SURE THEY WON'T DO THAT AGAIN, WHAT IF THE FATHER HAS MORE DAUGHTERS, HE WILL REPEAT HIS ANIMAL ACT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

THE POOR GIRL SHOULD BE TAKEN AWAY FROM HER PARENTS. . IF THEY MADE THIS CHOICE FOR HER AT AGE 10, I WOUNDER WHAT KIND OF PLANS THEY HAVE FOR HER FUTURE, GOD HELP HER TO FORGET ALL THE ABUSE SHE WENT THROUGH, IF SHE CAN EVER BE NORMAL.

It's a good thing that she got the award... but I can't help feeling sad... that of all the women in the Arab world... an [Arab] woman [girl] got it just because she rebelled on her abusive family...
Will we ever get an award for a more positive reason? Will we ever be more than just that...in the eyes of the world?
